GTA 6 teen hacker accused of blackmailing Rockstar by releasing source code of sequel
Grand Theft Auto VI is one of the most anticipated games ever. Its notoriety also makes it a great target for hackers. According to a recent Reuters story, this included a hacker sending a message to all Rockstar employees on the company’s Slack threatening to reveal the source code of GTA VI.
Based on Reuters, the hacker accused is Arion Kurtaj, a teenage member of the Lapsus$ hacking group. He is facing a total of 12 counts, including three counts of extortion, two counts of fraud and six counts under the UK’s Computer Misuse Act.
In addition to Rockstar, Kurtaj is also accused of targeting companies including Revolut, Uber and Nvidia, and extorting British broadband provider BT Group and demanding a $4 million ransom. Kurtaj is said to be mentally unfit to stand trial.
In 2022, Rockstar Games suffered “network intrusion” resulted in a bunch of unfinished content and games being leaked on social media. Rockstar moved quickly to remove the leaked material, but it was unable to completely stop its spread. It even appeared in Goat Simulator 3 before being promptly removed.
“We really take leaks very seriously and they let us all down, which is really frustrating and frustrating for the team,” Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in the wake of the leak. “However, because of business issues, we are not affected. But because of personal issues and emotional issues, our team is affected.”
Although Kurtaj was not named at the time, Uber released a blog revealing that it was working with the FBI and the US Department of Justice to investigate its own data breaches, and they suspect it. is the same hacker behind the Rockstar breaches.
We don’t know when GTA 6 will be released, but it could be as soon as next year. In the meantime, the jury will try to determine if Kurtaj is responsible for the alleged hack, though they will not reach a guilty verdict.
