“Had a few conversations”: Ricky Ponting about being approached for the job of coaching the India team
The new era of Indian cricket has begun under Coach Rahul Dravid and new full-time T20I captain Rohit Sharma. India started their journey under Dravid with a win over New Zealand in the first T20I of a three-match series on Wednesday in Jaipur. While, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has revealed that he has been approached for the position of head coach of Team India in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 but after giving some thought, he has decided to turn it down as realizing nature of work and how to manage your time.
“I’ve had a couple of conversations with some people in the IPL about it (the head coach position.) The people I spoke to had a really hard time figuring out how to make it work. The first thing. I say I can ‘not give much time, which means I can’t train in IPL,'” Ponting speaks on the Grade Cricketer Podcast.
The two-time World Cup winner was also surprised to see Rahul Dravid take over as head coach, citing family life and young children.
“Actually, I was surprised to see Dravid do the same. There’s been a lot of talk about how happy he feels in the under-19 role. I’m not sure about his family life. but I’m sure he has a baby, so I was surprised he took it but like I said, the people I spoke to made sure they found the right person so they could let Dravid do it. that,” he said.
The former Australia captain is currently the head coach of the IPL team Delhi Capitals. During the podcast when the legendary cricketer was asked about his future contract with Delhi Capitals, he confirmed that he will join the franchise next year.
“I’m pretty sure I’ll be in Delhi next year. I’ve loved the last four years while I’ve been there. We’ve had a great time together and some of the young players I’ve had the opportunity to work with. very special and really good people Prithvi Shaw, Shreyas Iyer, Avesh Khan and all of these have really become exceptionally good IPL players and some of them have also become internationals. really good,” said Ponting.
Commenting on next year’s big auction, Ponting said that the franchise will try to keep the majority of players from the current pool but he believes it will be a big challenge.

“With the things that are kept, we can only keep four players and I think we had about 24 or 25 players on the team last year. We’ll try to bring the majority of those back in. ideal for us but it will also be a challenge With the retreats and the two new teams you can make sure they are talking to Iyer (Shreyas) they are talking to Pant (Rishabh ) and they’re trying to protect these people and lock them up as generational franchise players. It’s up to me and the Delhi franchise to make sure they don’t get their hands on them.” he added.
Delhi Capitals finished third at IPL 2021 and they reached the playoffs for the third consecutive season, with a runner-up position in 2020.
