Haney: Worried about recognition if he beats Garcia
Devin Haney is worried about getting credit from fans and the media after his win over Ryan Garcia on Saturday night in their first fight on the DAZN PPV.
Weight loss comes at a cost
He looked exhausted today, and things were going to get a lot worse before tomorrow. Haney will look like a walking corpse tomorrow, with only a human skeleton remaining.
Compared to Haney's last fight, he doesn't look nearly as exhausted on the surface and that could mean he won't rehydrate into the mid-160s. If Haney is weakened by the weight he taking it off and putting it back on, we can see him weaken.
The fighter can only expend more than 20 lbs in a given amount of time before it catches up with them and they are defeated. Haney is putting his health first by losing so much weight to compete in a weight class he shouldn't be competing in.
Even at 147 it's too light. When a fighter rehydrates to 165, like Haney, they will compete at 154.
Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) was his usual self today, having fun with the media and sending Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) into oblivion. He is the only person who made today's press conference interesting.
Ryan brings flavor to the press conference. Yes, Ryan was great at some of the things he said today, but he kept things interesting.
Haney is taking the high road, choosing not to get into the mud with Ryan in favor of going into trash-talking mode. It was a tactical move by Haney to play the good guy and have Ryan play the villain.
Concerned about Garcia's behavior
“There's something wrong with him. I don't know what's going on, but it's not normal.” WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney told mediareacting to Ryan Garcia going 100% crazy at his final press conference today in New York.
“I want my credit [afterward] because that's the work I've put in to get to this stage,” Haney continued, worried that he might not get full credit for the win when Ryan acted oddly.
“I did everything I had to do at this camp the best I could. We bet $500,000 per pound. Let's see if he gains weight. I hate that they discredit me. I see it's an early night now. I don't think Ryan can play a full 12 minutes with me.
Fear of a Garcia crisis
Devin Haney is predicting an overtime win, but the real concern is whether Ryan will play before kickoff. Ryan losing his marbles will be interesting to watch, but hopefully he won't do anything in the fight moving forward.
