Haney's weight loss: A disaster waiting to happen
Devin Haney looked terrible on Thursday at the final press conference for his fight with Ryan Garcia above DAZN PPV. There's no hiding the fact that the WBC lightweight champion's weight loss is making him brutal as he tries to get down to the 140 mark.
Cutting from 170+ to 140 (if those rumors are true) is a recipe for body failure. Devin is just asking for trouble when it comes to losing that kind of weight. The worry here is about his long-term health.
Haney looked truly exhausted, wearing a jacket and sunglasses seemingly as a strategy to disguise her weight loss. It doesn't fool anyone.
Devin's eyes looked sunken from dehydration and it was obvious he was going through torture to get down to 140.
Sunglasses on the scales: My bold prediction
I wouldn't be surprised if Haney wore sunglasses when she checked the scale, even when she was on the scale, to hide how sunken her eye sockets were. I'm predicting that right now.
The way Haney looks, he'll have to move up to welterweight soon because he's had to work hard, dropping from what some believe to be 170+ down to 140 to fight much longer, guys.
When Haney moves up to welterweight, Jaron 'Boots' Ennis will be waiting for him, and there's no way he can avoid that guy without looking like a scared cat. If Haney remains at 140, Subriel Matias is his only real option as he won't be able to negotiate a fight with Teofimo Lopez.
That guy is going to want at least $20 million, and his promoters at Top Rank probably won't make it easy on Haney if he doesn't sign with them for a few fights fight.
Ryan Garcia: A Lurking Threat
Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) was able to pull off the upset and sink Haney's ship before he even got to the fight with Boots Ennis, Matias and Teofimo. Haney may have exhausted himself so many times that it finally caught up with him.
Garcia looked like a wolf during Thursday's press conference seeing how exhausted Haney was and ready to pounce on his prey.
Nature has a way of solving things for weight bullies. Haney is a great example of a guy competing outside of his natural weight class by training to drop over 25 lbs from 165 to 140. I wouldn't be surprised if he caught Ryan, and he got beat bang because he was so weak from losing weight.
