For the past two decades, Hannibal Buress, who raps under the stage name Eshu Melodieswas ubiquitous in the comedy world.
At this point, he’s done it all: performing indie in venues around the world, writing on “Saturday Night Live,” releasing five comedy specials, creating his own TV series. himself (“Why? with Hannibal Buress”), making recurring appearances on Comedy Central’s “Broad City” and “Eric Andre Performance” on Adult Swim, voiced a movie (“The Secret Life of Pets”), and performed at music festivals including the Adult Swim Festival and his own event , Isola . Festival.
But if you ask Buress what excites him these days, he’ll rave about composing music.
Buress, who recently released a song called “I Don’t Stand Up By Accidents Anymore,” said Buress.I lift weights.” “That’s the difference right now. I won’t really access pop-ups and stuff for fun like I used to. I don’t want to do comedy over and over again on Tuesdays. I’ll turn on the mic and play music. If I’m doing a comedy, it’s like I’m trying to sell some tickets to pay for this damn music.”
Buress’s ideal Sunday in Los Angeles is mostly about composing music, but he also makes time for 1-3 bags at his favorite bowling alleys and watch live music performances. This is how he spends his perfect day. This interview has been edited and condensed for length and clarity.
7 a.m.: Have breakfast and write rhymes
When I’m in a good mood, I wake up around 7 a.m. or so. I don’t like to order too much breakfast. Occasionally, I’ll buy a breakfast pack or breakfast burrito at a place called angry stork.
I don’t do it every day, but if I finish a few articles before receiving any incoming communication or letting any outside thoughts enter my brain, that’s usually fine. Even if it’s only 30 minutes. I’ve written some of my better songs and things don’t show up, but I can tell the writing will be different when it’s as early in the morning as I can feel it. There are three studios in my house, so I’ll do it in the third with nothing in it. It’s just kind of soundproofing and you have to focus on writing. That’s one of the things I like about having it, you can really step into another world. No street noise, no birdsong or anything. It’s just the room and the music.
Sometimes I will practice drumming. I don’t play drums as much as I would like. But I want to participate in it every day because drumming is all fours, it’s really something that you have to be completely focused on, so it’s a good brain activity. I find that my mood throughout the day if I hit the drums early is pretty sleepy.
8:00 am: Read random passages from several books
I’ve relieved the pressure of worrying about finishing books, and sometimes I like to take five books and then read a few pages, say 10 pages each, and just take what I want from them. I mostly read non-fiction. I received this book called “Number Ones” [by Tom Breihan], which talks about various chart-topping hits and the stories surrounding them. In addition, the Questlove . books [“Music is History” and “Creative Quest”]; there’s a book by Jimi Hendrix that I’m reading; and a book by Andre Iguodala, who plays for the Warriors, called “Friday Man.”
11am: Arrive at Leimert Park Plaza
I’m going to Leimert Park. I’ll go get a coat at one of the [stores] and buy a shirt or something. It is possible to buy an old book from someone.
I will just walk around. I’ll usually get something from somewhere by the shortest route. I won’t stand in long queues to buy food because there are so many other places. Other places can’t be as bad. They can not that thing bad.
2pm: Hit “1-3 bags“ at a bowling alley
I love Rugby in Pasadena. They have a private area with a few side lanes which is great. They let me play my music there, nice to hear. I go to Shatto Road 39 Sometimes. There used to be this 24-hour location called bowl of gage. It’s still open, just less than 24 hours, but before the pandemic, I would be there late at 3am. That’s actually where I went bowling with a high score of 197, but that’s solo play, which doesn’t really count.
I will go with friends and other musicians. We’ll order a bunch of food: pizza, some wings, cauliflower, some banh tet, some quesadillas.
I have a friend who is a professional bowler, GG MasonWho passed. She happened to be in town and she upgraded because she wasn’t around. [Laughs] I’m good at bowling, but I’m extremely inconsistent – just like my life. So I have great peaks and wonderful valleys. So I’ll hit a few hits, then gutter. That’s what got me rapping about it, people were like, “Am I going to be ruined?” I like, “Maybe. But also, you can win. I don’t know what will happen. I can hit 170. I can also hit 93. Who knows what will happen now?”
5pm: Arrive at Wisdome LA
I want to go wisdom LA. I haven’t been there for a minute, but they’ve done what they do there with art and pictures and it’s a good place to get inspiration. They might just have different visuals and art, or I know they have themed content, or they might have some sonic bathroom-style content. I went to a Hendrix stuff there, like a reimagining of Jimi Hendrix’s music.
19h: Play games at Two Bit Circus
Since I’m in the area, I’ll go Two-bit circus. I just love different fun games. They have VR stuff there. They have some basketball stuff. They have a lot of games that I haven’t seen anywhere else on the console. It’s like another world there.
21:00: Watch a live show at the Moroccan Lounge
i went to Moroccan Lounge first time [recently]. Carrtoons is performing and Rob Araujo, a musician, is extremely addicted and he plays some of my shows. He plays the keyboard. So I went to see. He invited me to sing a song. It feels great to be there and the sound is great, and it makes me want to just watch s— there. It’s super intimate, but it sounds great and has a good display.
11:30 p.m.: Exercise in between “Rocket League”
I will play Missile Federation At home. It’s like a race car [driving] and football mixed together. It’s a super fun game. I haven’t really played other things much since I started playing it. I used to play NBA2K some, but it was replaced. Rocket League is a better game. That’s a lot of action packed. So now I try to incorporate my workouts into Rocket League because when someone scores for either team, there’s about 15 seconds to replay. And so you can skip that, but I started out just using that time to do 5 quick pushups or 10 jumps or something really quick during that time. And the game is five minutes, so it’s very fast. I’ll usually mix or something while I’m playing. I’ll play the Amapiano remix or the new one JPEG and Danny Brown really good to play Rocket League.
12:30: Listen to podcasts until you fall asleep
What will I do? Calling all my exes.
I would relax and watch a show, listen to a podcast. Right now, I hear”No Label Needed” podcasts abound with Sean “Brandman” Taylor and Jacorey “Kohrey” Barkley. On days like this, I go to bed around 1 or 2 am
I don’t try to do anything before 10 or 11 am because I want to be able to write immediately and read, play, or compose music. I want that, if possible, to be the first thing I do because then it starts a good move for the day.
