‘He was the first horse prospect I sold at auction’

Jim Bolger says his Classics win prospects Mac Swiney (Ire) (The new approach {Ire}–Halla Na Saoire {Ire}, by Teofilo {Ire}) will appeal to nearly any sire in the world when it’s put up for sale online by Goffs on Friday, the day 20 January but expressed a wish for the 2021 G1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner to stay in Ireland.
According to Bolger, the reason was that he wanted to support Mac Swiney with a dozen mares during his first season at college.
Bolger also reveals that, despite the fact that the horse led his stable friend home Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) in that memorable Curragh Classic was the subject of several “baits”, the legendary breeder and trainer keen to put the horse up for public auction with Goffs.
He said, “It’s interesting, isn’t it? Mac Swiney would be attractive anywhere in the world but obviously I would if he stayed in Ireland where I could use him.
“I have a dozen mares I want to send him and the only reason I sold him was because I was unfair in promoting him.”
Bolger added: “Due to the unique nature of my businesses, I had to keep growing them. We’ve had several offers over the past six months or so for Mac Swiney but we’ve decided to sell him in a public auction. He was the first promising stallion that I put up for public auction.”
The Mac Swiney sale will take place just a few months after Bolger’s Gan Teorainn (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), owned by Ennistown Stud, was sold for 1 million gns at the Tattersalls December Horse Sale.
To that, he commented, “It’s a good achievement. She can only improve because she was quite backward when she was 2 years old.”
Mac Swiney won four times in all. Three of those wins were recorded as a 2-year-old, including in the G1 Vertem Futurity S. in Doncaster in 2020.
Reflecting on the highlight of Mac Swiney’s career at Curragh, Bolger added, “It was a special day. It was comfortable that day because we knew very well that the race was ours. He has top form. He’s an Irish Guineas 2000 winner and he’s also shown nimbleness at the age of two.
Goffs CEO Henry Beeby described it as “a rare opportunity” to be given the opportunity to sell the Classic winning car on behalf of Bolger.
He said, “The Goffs are delighted to have commissioned the sale of Classic winner Mac Swiney on behalf of Mr. Bolger. This is a rare opportunity to purchase many winning stallions in Group 1 and we anticipate a great deal of international interest through the excellent Goffs Online platform making it possible for bidders to easily reach that sale regardless of location.
