Winning racer Rafael Bejarano said: “I had a very good ride. “I put her where I wanted to be and started from there. i followed favorites [Faiza], come stretch and let her out. My horse responded very well and it finished excellently. She has improved a lot.”
Regarding the defeated favorite, Bob Baffert explained, “She broke well and is in a good position. When the run started, she didn’t have the kick she usually has. She ran a good race; Today she is not good enough. We are still trying to find her. [Flavien] Prat said she had a trip. She did everything right but won.
He added, “It was a good test for her, it was her first time shipping. We are proud of her; At least she was right there. Those two fillings [Taxed and Hoosier Philly] look good in the yard; I think they will run fine. We’ll go home to her and regroup.
The win gave Bejarano his first classified win since GII Jessamine S. 2021 over California Angel, while it was coach Randy Morse’s first win since GI 2014 Stephen Foster S. with Moonshine Mullin .
“It’s hard to compete with these people who come in and spend millions on ponies,” Morse said. “I don’t take them down – I want to be in their place. Most of my better horses have been requested.
“I beat Stephen Foster, that’s 1st place. Even if it’s a race for rights, win is win.”
Claimed $50,000 in the face of teenage girls at Churchill Downs last November, Taxed is back in fourth place behind GI Central Bank future winner Ashland S. destination (Cross Traffic) at Year End S. in Oaklawn on December 31st before a solid runner-up finish wet paint (Blame) in the Martha Washington S. Morse explains: “She was always pulling, over the top. “Because every time she runs, she looks like she’s about to win, and she has no end in sight. As you can see now she is relaxing behind the horse and settling down. It made a huge difference.”
Taxed in Black-Eyed Susan after not being able to join the GI Kentucky Oaks May 5 as a first-timer is also eligible.
The foal’s owner, Omaha, Nebraska, resident Richard Bahde, has owned horses for 30 years, racing mainly in Kentucky and Arkansas. According to Bahde, the win marks his first win at this level.
“I started going to the bullring in Nebraska with people asking for $5,000 and then I met [trainer Randy Morse] and he took me to a whole other level. We had a lot of fun together.”
When asked about Taxed’s most recent win, he was excited: “When she moved on that turn, I knew we won. She loves her job, she loves to run and once she’s out, it’s over. She passed [Hoosier Philly] as if she were standing still.”
