Homemade sea salt spray for hair

Coming in second to Dry Shampoo, sea salt spray is probably the hair product I use the most, and it’s also very easy to make yourself!
Sea salt spray or sea wave spray has become popular recently and it is the most commonly used product for those popular ocean waves. It gives off a surf girl vibe. Many sea salt sprays leave hair feeling dry, as the salt pulls moisture and natural oils out.
The gold standard of beach hair sprays (in my opinion) are Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray with moisturizing kelp. While this spray works well, it’s still a regular hair product and has some ingredients that I don’t want to use. I like it because it uses magnesium sulfate (aka Epsom Salt) instead of sea salt, which makes the hair less dry. It also has some natural oils (aka conditioners) to add nutrients to the hair.
Create your own beach wave spray
I set out to create my own version of sea salt spray for hair without any questionable ingredients. The result is one of the simplest natural hair care recipes. And it costs a lot less than the store-bought versions.
It adds great texture and volume to the hair without harsh chemicals. If you do it yourself, you can also customize it according to your hair type to get the texture you want.
If you have drier hair, experiment by adding some jojoba or argan oil. To stay light, skip the sea salt and use only Epsom salt. For those with wavy or curly hair, this sea salt spray can help tame frizzy strands for a messy look.
I use this all the time and it works great, even on my hair it can be hard to tame and it’s really hard to keep curls. In fact, I used this on the cover of my cookbook. I get a lot of questions about how to keep my hair like that and whether I use natural products (I did).
My whole routine for cookbook cover hair is styling spray and dry shampoo for volume, this ceramic curling wand for curls/waves, and sugar and salt spray.
Source of sea salt
You will need a spray bottle that holds at least 10 oz. I initially used a glass bottle made from an old apple cider vinegar bottle and a regular spray head.
Since this is a natural product and has no preservatives (other than salt and alcohol) it won’t keep as long as the store-bought versions. Best kept in the refrigerator and used within a few weeks. If you don’t think you’ll use it that quickly, cut the recipe in half.
All about that base
I will sometimes use chamomile or black tea instead of water in this recipe. Chamomile helps brighten hair by creating natural highlights. Black tea helps to darken hair. However, if you are using tea, the spray will only last about 1 to 2 weeks in the refrigerator. If it has previously smelled or developed a different texture, offer it up.
To help prevent bacterial growth, it’s important to use distilled or filtered water in this recipe. If using filtered water, boil it first and then let it cool a bit before using.
Essential oils for Sea Salt Spray
You don’t need to add essential oils, but it will add a pleasant fragrance to your hair. Read more about the best essential oils for hair here. My favorites for this salt spray are lavender and citrus but here are some good options.

How to use sea salt spray for hair
Spray onto damp hair and rub with a towel to dry for loose waves. Spray onto dry hair and onto roots for volume and wave-free texture. It helps thin and fine hair look fuller.
If you have thin, straight hair and you want it to float naturally all day: Wash your hair the night before and spray the sea salt wave mix while it’s still damp. Then you can braid your hair into a French braid or wrap it in a tight bun on the top of your head. and leave overnight to dry in the air.
Spray some more salt water and remove the braids/buns. That’s it- waves all day. Spray more hairspray and style if you want a stiffer look.
