Earlier last month, a new Reddit user named u/sadfutago joined the Nier subreddit to ask what might seem to an outsider a rather innocuous question: “How do you open a church?“
Their post was short and to the point, explaining that they were new to Reddit and wanted to know how to open a church in Nier: Automata, which they explained in the replies meant “where in the city” The city is reproduced underground where you fight sir.” They explain that while they can open the door, their friend in the same part of the game cannot.
Problem? There is no such church in the Copy City. Or anywhere else in Nier: Automata, which anyone knows. And now, thanks to this one user, the entire community is currently losing their minds trying to solve the mystery behind this location.
At first, community members who responded to sadfutago’s post thought they might be confused or incorrectly described where they were trying to go and asked to take a screenshot or a clip of the game to better understand it. what is going on. But over the next month, when sadfutago sporadically returned to the subreddit to release gaming proof of their predicament, it became clear that what they were showing was not a misunderstanding at all. . Instead, it appears to be a secret area complete with lore implications and easter eggs that no Nier: Automata player has accessed before.
In their previous posts, sadfutago uploaded clips and screenshots of what appeared to be a secret door in the Clone City and beyond, a mysterious church with benches and upper balcony. When Redditors asked for more evidence and offered advice on how to more clearly share clips and screenshots, sadfutago’s submissions became more detailed. Things have gone viral in recent days, as multiple clips they’ve shared reveal the extent of the area’s supposed secrecy.
It starts with a hidden door, followed by a long ladder that drops down. The music changes, and there are eerie spiers that retract as the A2 runs down a long, zigzag corridor that leads to a giant door that opens into a church. A short cutscene plays as A2 enters, focusing on some elements of the church, and when A2 enters, she has a brief dialogue with Pod 042 which some have identified as dialogues. happens elsewhere in the game.
In front of the church, the body of a child appears to be buried with a Moon tear growing out of their chest. The child is surrounded by Devola and Poppola’s weapons, a mysterious block of darkness that cannot be interacted with, and a box that appears to be able to be hacked by 9S.
So what’s going on here? Currently, the Nier: Automata community has completely failed. Many people think that sadfutago somehow accidentally found a clipped content, points to a known beta version of Clone City including an unbelievable church in almost the same place – albeit a very different one from the one Sadfutago had found.
But if this is a hidden easter egg or cut content then it should theoretically be able to be replicated by other players under the same conditions. And so far, no one else has been able to reveal this strange secret in their own game clones.
They’ve tried everything from matching quests and progression conditions that Sadfutago describes in their own game to trying to clone the same platform and patched version, to no avail. . Data researchers are investigating the code of Nier: Automata, looking for anything that might indicate how to unlock this strange church and its contents, but have yet to find anything.
While this huge lack of evidence suggests this is probably just a fun hoax from a talented modder, the modding community isn’t so sure. Many members of the Nier: Automata modding community on both Reddit and the official Discord modding community have asserted that up until this point, modders haven’t been able to create anything this complicated, especially since this section contains much content does not exist elsewhere in the game.
Is an official post from Nier: Automata modding Discord put it:

That’s not to say this can’t be a mod – in fact, one theory going around is that this is an elaborate tease from a modder or a group of modders who figured out how to tweak it. Edit the map at this level and who is building to fully reveal their hard work. But as some have pointed out, this is a pretty long slog for such an announcement as it started almost two months ago, so many members of the community don’t seem to be paying attention to it and it Not really attractive. until last week.
