However, as with many screen interactions, body language cues can be muted in digital catch-up conversations.
“You might miss some of the small allusions or slight raised eyebrows that you might notice in other people,” says Seker.
Some teachers and parents also complain of a loss of group identity due to random conversations between parents and other teachers, but McDonald says there are other opportunities for schools to build culture.
“As long as you give families other opportunities to come and connect directly with the school, I think that’s fine,” she said.
Doug Taylor, CEO of The Smith Family, hopes schools will continue to offer both, so families who work overtime can hold a meeting online, or those who don’t have a device suitable or internet connection can still meet the teacher.
“One in six students [in our education sponsorship program] without reliable devices or internet access at home, which shows the scale of this digital divide,” he said.

“There is also the issue of digital literacy among parents and caregivers at a disadvantage, with many finding it difficult to navigate school portals or online video calls right away. even when they are connected.”
How to enhance your parent-teacher interview
Whether you’re interviewing the parent-teacher online or in person, Derek McCormack, director of the Parenting Network, recommends talking with your child first to get to know them better.
“Before the interview, let them know that you are meeting the teacher and why, then lead with some open-ended questions. [such as] ‘How do you think you’ll go? What subjects do you like?’” he said.
McDonald’s also suggests pre-checking any school data or reports.
“The real conversation brings three parties together – parents, students, teachers – to [discuss] How do they feel about their learning progress? Are they aligned?” she speaks.
“There shouldn’t be any surprises. You’re talking about a five- or ten-minute meeting, [which is] It’s not the time for parents or teachers to raise important new academic or behavioral issues – it’s a conversation that takes more time and interest and should take place outside of the time frame. Short interviews between parents and teachers.”
McCormack says that if you’re tackling a difficult topic or challenge for your child, all parties will benefit from an open, positive approach. “It’s always been about solving problems and seeing the conversation as two people on a team, thinking about what we can do next,” he said.
“When raising a concern or asking for help, it is often better to start with what tends to help. [your child] – maybe, ‘My kids tend to do this well but not so well at this. What do you think we can do to help solve this problem?’”
Seker hopes parents and students also remember that many teachers are facing their own challenges, just like their students.
“Like anyone who has been through a pandemic, a lot of teachers are working very hard right now. So I think [it’s good to use] a little respect and courtesy,” she said.
“Teachers really care about your child’s best interests – they want to see them improve and want to see them learn.”
