Rennala Queen of the Full Moon is a demigod, or rather a demigod in her possession, residing in the legacy dungeon of Raya Lucaria Academy. The witch mother was in the Great Library, surrounded by her orphaned disciples, and unleashed powerful magical attacks. Unlike Margit or Godrick, this is a relatively easy fight – especially for users who focus on melee. In this Elden Ring boss guide, I’ll show you how to defeat Rennala Queen of the Full Moon.
Overview
Rennala has two phases where she switches between half health. The first is more of a puzzle than a battle, while the second is a moonlit duel that requires you to dodge a barrage of magical projectiles. If you’re aggressive enough, you can quickly take down the mage and end the struggle before she uses her most destructive spells. Demigods are very resistant to magic damage, so your best strategy is to deal physical damage.
Finally, there are no NPC summons for this encounter, although your spirit summons will help a lot. I recommend using Godrick Soldier Ashes or Lone Wolf Ashes, as they are both effective at interrupting Rennala’s spellcasting. Regardless, save your Spirit Summons until the second stage of the fight.
How to beat Rennala
After entering the library, Rennala will hover above her students’ classroom, surrounded by a force field. Start immediately looking for three golden glow minions – you must kill them before you can damage the boss. Be aware of the many enemies in the classroom – candle-blowers that breathe fire, others that throw objects, and glowing minions who throw books at you. Run through research and eliminate three beaming students. Sometimes they would lie beneath Rennala, while others might lurk along the outer perimeter of the library.
The boss’s force field will open, and she will fall to the ground. She’s completely vulnerable at the moment, so don’t stop attacking. Step back immediately when Rennala’s hand begins to glow, as this signals she is about to create a massive explosion and reset her force field. Now you will have to repeat this whole process, where Rennala will probably be more aggressive and will sometimes throw bullets at you. If your damage output is high enough, you will only have to repeat this cycle twice.
The boss will teleport you to a moonlit lake during her second phase, where her attacks become much more critical. She opens with a three-second cast, unleashing a devastating beam of magic capable of single-shoting anything in its path. After dodging her attack, immediately invoke your Spirit Summons and then dodge the projectiles she might send in your direction. You’ll be rewarded for an aggressive playstyle, as the boss has little armor and will be stunned by a consistent burst of damage. If you deal enough damage and play aggressive, you can completely defeat Rennala before she uses her most powerful spells.
However, if you can’t defeat her soon, you’ll need to know how to counter a few spells. When the moon witch summons the hovering moon, return immediately, waiting to see if it is watching you or your soul companion. The celestial body explodes on impact and will definitely kill you. If it is following you, avoid it by running or dodging when it approaches. Rennala also has some projectile abilities that work similarly. When she starts casting spells, be prepared to run faster and dodge the rockets before they hit you. If you get hit, you are likely to be hit back.
Finally, Rennala can summon various spirits: a wolf, a giant demon or a Bloodhound Knight, or even a large dragon. Aside from wolves, don’t attack her soul summoner. Instead, dodge their attacks while landing on Rennala.
