Try to promote Your productivity with a second monitor? Want more immersive gaming sessions? A lot of screen can help. Dual monitors are great for multitasking and are easy to set up, but there are a few things to consider before you step into the multi-monitor world — whether you’re on Windows or Mac.

How many screens can you add?
Most computers can run dual monitors. But if you want to add a third display or use two 4K displays, first check if your device is capable.
Windows: The presence of several ports on your graphics card indicates it can handle multiple monitors. But you should check the maximum number of monitors and resolutions supported. (You can see which graphics card you have by typing Equipment management in the Search bar, open it, then expand Display adapter.) Visit the manufacturer’s website to find the specs for your graphics card and look for the section titled Display support or something similar will list this information.
Mac: If you’re adding a display to your Mac, click Apple Icon > About This Mac and double-click your serial number, then press Command-C on your keyboard to copy it go to Apple’s websiteand paste it in search. Click Support to find Specifications and find Video support.
What screen size should you get?
You can mix and match the types of monitors you have at your workstation, though you’ll probably want some consistency. The most common screen size is 24 inches, but 27 inch monitors are becoming more and more popular. Having the same screen size is good for symmetry. Just pay attention to the resolution when you buy. A 1080p display on a 27-inch monitor can look too dim.
We dive into orientation and arrangement below, but consider different screen arrangements. Mine current hobby is a 34-inch ultra-wide monitor paired with a 27-inch display in portrait orientation. As the name suggests, the ultra-wide bezels are really wide and can give the experience of two screens, minus the bezel in the middle. Pairing it with a display in portrait mode means you have enough space on the ultra-wide display to run two full-size browser windows side by side, plus a side-by-side portrait display for apps. benefit from it, like Slack and email.
VESA Brackets and Mounts
The monitor comes with a variety of stand designs. If you’re using the stand that came in the box, check the measurements on the product page to make sure it will fit on your desk.
Alternatively, you can attach your monitor to your desk and remove the stand, freeing up a lot of space. (You’re also free to move your monitor to a variety of angles and positions.) Many monitors support the VESA mount system. Have different size, and monitor arms have a range of screen sizes and maximum weights they can support. Always check if the monitor’s product page mentions VESA support and note the VESA mount size. When you purchase an arm mount, make sure it supports the screen size and weight of your new monitor.
Ports and cables
To get the most out of your computer and monitor, you’ll need to think about which ports and cables to use. For Windows PCs, your choices are usually HDMI vs DisplayPort. Unfortunately, this is not as simple as you might expect. There are several versions of each connection type, each with different capabilities. For example, HDMI 2.1 supports resolutions up to 8K at 120 HzDisplayPort 1.4 can provide 8K at 60 Hz and HDMI 2.0 is limited to 4K at 60 Hz.
For laptops, you might be looking at Thunderbolt, Mini DisplayPort, or even USB-C. Sometimes you will need an adapter or USB hub to connect an external monitor.
Check the specifications for your graphics card and monitor to find the best option for you. Remember that the card, display, and cable (and any adapters) you use must support the same technology and the same version. High-end monitors often come with several cables in the box, but annoyingly some manufacturers offer a single option that may not match the monitor’s top-of-the-line capabilities.
