Winter is the season when our vegetable baskets are filled with fresh green beans. We eat this fibrous vegetable every day and make a lot of recipes out of it. While we certainly can’t get enough of these fresh beans, winter is coming to an end. This also means you may not be getting fresh green beans anymore. However, did you know that if properly stored, green beans can be used longer? Yes, you heard us. Our refrigerator holds a wide variety of leftovers. Freezers extend the shelf life of many perishable foods. A package of processed foods, meats, curries, soups and stews, some vegetables, etc. can be frozen, extending the shelf life of these foods. Step-by-step process to keep peas fresh longer
- Take the green beans and remove the outer shell. Keep in a bowl and rinse them well.
- Next, put in a pot of boiling water and then add a little sugar. Let it disappear. Sugar helps to preserve color.
- Now throw in the peas. For two minutes, keep the heat on medium and high, then turn off the heat.
- Pass the peas through the sieve immediately. Then, quickly submerge them in ice-cold water or plain water with ice cubes.
- Keep the peas in this container until they are completely cooled. Then pass them through the sieve again.
- Now zip the peas to the small polythene bags. Make sure they are airtight. Place these bags in the deep freezer. You can also make use of an airtight container. However, it is recommended to keep it in a zip-lock bag as it takes up less space.
