Hyundai Australia launches EV truck, hydrogen engine under research

by Hyundai The growing range of Ioniq-branded electric vehicles may attract attention, but the company’s EV efforts extend beyond passenger cars.

The company is introducing its product powerful electric truck – such a humble name! – mid-2023. Pricing and final specifications will be confirmed closer to launch.

Instead of being handled by Hyundai Trucks Australia, the Korean automaker’s sole importer of diesel commercial vehicles, Mighty will be imported and distributed by Hyundai Motor Company Australia (HMCA).

HMCA also said it was working on a large-capacity, long-haul hydrogen-powered Xcient Fuel Cell main engine for potential testing in Australia. It is currently used on roads in Switzerland and California.

The Mighty has a 114.5 kWh battery and an estimated range of 240 km, which Hyundai says makes it “ideal” for urban and last-mile deliveries.

It is equipped with a traction motor with 120kW of power and 320Nm of torque.

Mighty will be available in a single 7300kg GVM variant, in a 4×2 configuration with a 3300mm wheelbase.

It will be available in bare, single-tray or pantech versions (conventional or cooled), with a dump truck variant being worked on.

It is classified as a Light Heavy Duty Truck (3501-8000kg GVM) and has an approximate cargo capacity of one to 3.5 tons, depending on variant and upper body specifications.

Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, electronic stability control and an electronic air brake system.

Hyundai says each Mighty will have a “disproportionately large” impact on total emissions reductions, as heavy vehicles make up just 4% of the national fleet but make up 25% of total vehicle emissions in Australia. .

Globally, the company wants to be carbon neutral in its products and operational by 2045.

Mighty specs are as follows:

  • Chassis weight: 3250kg
  • GVM: 7300kg
  • Load capacity: 3500kg
  • Front axle load: 2300kg
  • Rear axle load: 5000kg
  • Length: 6140mm
  • Wheelbase: 3300mm
  • Width: 2100mm
  • Height: 2865mm
  • Rotation: 13.6m
  • Suspension: Leaf springs/Tweezer leaf springs (front), leaf springs (rear)

Hyundai isn’t the only familiar brand launching electric trucks, with Volvo Trucks Australia introducing the FL and FE Electric midsize models.

Australian company ELECTRIC SEA has been producing vehicles locally since 2017, replacing the Hino diesel truck’s powertrain with the patented SEA-Drive Powertrain.
