Attorneys Maurice Blackburn has filed a class-action lawsuit against Hyundai in the Supreme Court of Victoria, seeking damages to owners of vehicles with faulty anti-lock braking systems.
The vehicles affected by these issues are already subject to a recall by the company, with Hyundai stating in the recall notice that the circuit board of the ABS module can short-circuit when its components are exposed to moisture. .
This can lead to a fire, even when the vehicle is turned off, although it does not affect the operation of the brake system.
In its recall notice, Hyundai advised owners to park their vehicles outside in a well-ventilated area and away from flammable materials and structures until recall action can be taken.
Main Plaintiff Anne-Maree Johnston’s car caught fire in her garage, located directly below her bedroom. She was able to put out the fire before it engulfed her house.
“It could be a deadly disaster. We were very lucky to notice smoke coming into the house from the garage. If we didn’t find it soon, the whole house would almost certainly catch on fire,” Ms Johnston said.
