How to understand everything actually the job explains a lot of the reasons why too much is disorienting.
It is not natural. Nature relies on physical and biological thermostats to detect when things are getting too hot or too big or too much. Stars too massive for their own gravity will collapse and regenerate in ever-evolving forms. Predator and prey are always testing each other over long periods of time to strike a balance that is sustainable for both. Microbiology, electrolytes, blood sugar, cellular metabolism — anything can kill you too much or too little, so balance is essential.
Ursula Le Guin, reflecting on age among other things, described a questionnaire she received from her alma mater, Harvard, on the occasion of the 60th reunion of her graduating class. (Her college is, of course, Radcliffe, she points out, the product of gender exclusion, a “detail” that Harvard overlooks.) One question arises: “What would improve. quality of life for future generations of your family?” The second option is “economic stability and growth for the United States.”
Le Guin wrote: “That completely hinders me. “You can’t have both.”
Growth is good at one point. In addition, it also makes children obese, multiplying cells leading to cancer; it makes us ignore the well-known fact that organisms and societies of optimal size can only exist in homeostasis with the earth, ocean, atmosphere. Furthermore, she points out, uncontrolled growth as the only survival tactic is bound to fail if only because it limits our ability to adapt, to consider alternatives.
The great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy (who knew a thing or two about war and peace) wrote a moral story titled “How much land does a man need?” It’s a great story, so spoiler alert: In the end, the answer is simple and unsurprising: 6 feet.
Nature does not create new items from all fabrics. It recycles: water, air, mountains, energy, matter.
When old people like me gain too many years to maintain, we too will be recycled. My atoms will form new collectives, using the good old ones E = mc2 to turn energy into matter, who knows what? Nature will decide what it takes to keep things in balance. Death is the thermostat of life that shuts down your circuits.
You could argue (and I will) that the overwhelming confusion and chaos of many things is due to the lack of a functioning thermostat. The settings stuck at more. More precision, more speed, more land, more people, more baths, more bonuses, more loot, bigger bonuses, more things to binge on. We are bursting at the seams.
And let’s not forget more friends, more likes, more followers, more opinions. When is community sourcing (more voices) accepted as the best way to get accurate results? As opposed to, say, voice-announced? Voice experience? I don’t understand that.
