Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said India was looking for an electricity-based technology for mass transit that is fast, cost-effective and can be produced domestically. “The ministry plans to implement the development of cable car lines as an alternative transportation solution in hilly areas and congested urban areas.
“Lines, cable cars… and especially I am very interested in working on light rail transport technology,” Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, told a US audience. here on Friday.
Several US companies have also approached him with the technology, he said in his keynote on ‘Rebuilding Infrastructure for India 2.0’, part of the ‘Reimagining India 2.0 series’.
The dialogue series – part of the Silicon Valley Monthly Dialogue (SVD) – was launched by the Foundation for the Study of India and Indian Communities (FIIDS) on the occasion of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ at the age of 75 .
“We were looking for a technology that could save costs and we could manufacture it in India for rapid mass (system) transportation of electricity,” Gadkari said as he briefed on the developments. The government is planning 11 cable car projects to enhance connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur and Sikkim, he said.
He said port connectivity projects are being worked on to enable the rapid movement of goods connecting all ports and domestic water waste in order to increase the efficiency of domestic and international trade routes. he said.
As many as 65 projects with a length of 2,050 km are planned for port connectivity which are in different stages of development, he said.
He said India is also developing 29 emergency landing vehicles for fighter aircraft on national roads. “They are of strategic importance from a defense perspective.” Gadkari urged American companies to come and invest in India.
“Tech companies like you can join the effort to develop the best system for India,” he said, adding that India is allowing 100% of FDI in the road sector and has lots of opportunities for joint ventures.
“US-based companies can collaborate with our research and development reports for EV factory technology and the retrofit industry. The government is strongly promoting solar power and the best charging mechanism for electric mobility,” he said.
The government is working on a battery swap policy and standards for EV batteries, he said, and calls this a huge opportunity for all technologies because battery swapping is a whole new area.
“Both countries have a huge pool of young and talented engineers working on the most advanced technology. I sincerely hope that you will come forward and form joint ventures to realize the benefits of advanced technology in the field of construction, replacement, application and agricultural practice,” said Gadkari.
In response to a question, Gadkari said he is “very confident that we will bring the road infrastructure in India to par with that of the US by the end of 2024”.
