Indian cricketers wear black armbands to honor Lata Mangeshkar in first ODI against West Indies

Earlier, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla confirmed that the Indian team will wear black armbands to mourn the passing of Lata Mangeshkar.

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away Sunday at the age of 92. Megastar was admitted to Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai on 8 January after she was diagnosed with COVID-19 and pneumonia. Despite recovering from COVID, the singer was put on a ventilator after her condition worsened on Saturday.

Two days of national mourning will be observed in memory of Lata Mangeshkar. The national flag will also be flown at half-mast for two days, as a sign of respect, and she will be given a State funeral.

Dr Pratit Samdani, who was treating Lata Mangeshkar at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, said today, “We are deeply saddened to announce the grieving death of Lata Mangeshkar at 8:12 am. He passed away from multiple organ failure. more than 28 days in hospital after COVID-19.”

Mangeshkar is an Indian playback singer and occasional composer and is known to all by the nickname “The Nightingale of India” for her melodious voice.

Born on September 28, 1929, she began her career in 1942 at the age of 13. In a career spanning more than seven decades, the queen of tunes has recorded songs for more than a thousand sound films. Hindi. She has sung songs in over 36 Indian and foreign languages.

In 2001, in recognition of her contribution to the nation, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor and the second singer, after MS Subbulakshmi, to receive this honor.

She is also the recipient of three National Film Awards among many other honors she has received throughout her career. ‘Aye Mere Vatan Ke Logon’, ‘Babul Pyare’, Lag Ja Gale Se Phir’ among others are some of her iconic songs.

Mangeshkar is survived by four brothers – Asha Bhosle, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar and Meena Mangeshkar.
