INS Vela, 4th Stealth Scorpene Class Submarine, Introduced

The Indian Navy has welcomed its brand new fleet of submarines, the INS Vela, a Scorpene class submarine built by the government-owned Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, or MDL.
“The submarine’s ‘Watch, Valiant, Victory’ motto embodies the submarine’s spirit in fulfilling its mission. This motto inspires the crew to be alert and ready to face the face of the earth. and overcome every challenge that submarines face and triumph wherever they are,” Navy said in a statement today.
Named “Yard 11878” during construction, INS Vela is the fourth Scorpene-class submarine to be built by MDL in collaboration with the French Naval Group.

“The association of many Indian companies in building the platform makes it a true representation of the ‘Made in India’ concept,” the Navy said.
Construction began in July 2009. The submarine was named INS Vela in May 2019, and after extensive testing of systems, machines and weapons, it was handed over to the Navy by MDL India this month.
