Iranian Army jet crashes into school, 3 dead: Report
Tehran:
An Iranian fighter jet crashed Monday in a residential area of the northwestern city of Tabriz, killing three people, including two crew, state television reported.
The head of the local Red Crescent said the plane had crashed into a school and one of the dead was a resident in the vicinity.
Local official Mohammad-Bagher Honarvar told state television that the school was closed at the time due to the coronavirus pandemic.
He identified the plane as an F-5 fighter jet and said it crashed around 9:00 a.m. (05:30 GMT) in Monajem’s central Tabriz neighborhood.
State television said an investigation was underway.
The official news agency IRNA posted on its website a video of firefighters putting out the fire at the crash site.
Iran’s air force consists mainly of Russian MiG and Sukhoi fighters dating from the Soviet era, as well as some Chinese aircraft.
Several US F-4 and F-5 fighters from before the 1979 Islamic revolution are also part of the US air force.
