Israel has 12,000 new cases, the highest daily increase since two years
Jerusalem:
Israel’s Health Ministry on Wednesday announced nearly 12,000 cases of the new coronavirus, forming the largest daily increase in infections since the start of the pandemic nearly two years ago.
According to the figures, 11,978 new Covid cases were detected throughout Tuesday, surpassing the country’s previous record high of 11,344 cases recorded on September 2 last year.
While there are now nearly 60,000 people infected with Covid in Israel, the number of serious cases on Wednesday was just 125, according to the Health Ministry.
Nearly 4.3 million of Israel’s 9.4 million population have received three doses of the coronavirus vaccine. In recent days, authorities have begun administering a fourth injection to at-risk groups.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett predicted the number of cases would continue to rise and encouraged people to get vaccinated.
“The wave is really increasing now and we expect tens of thousands of confirmed cases in the next few days,” he said during a tour of a hospital in central Israel.
“The good news is that vaccines work, so anyone who gets vaccinated and wears a mask properly won’t get very sick, and the illness will clear up in a few days,” he said.
The whole country has officially recorded more than 1.4 million cases of Covid-19 infection, including 8,247 deaths.
