ISRO and Chinese company Oppo sign R&D contract of India’s NavIC messaging service. (Represent)

The Indian Space Research Organization has signed an agreement with Chinese smart device maker Oppo to ramp up research and development on the NavIC messaging service.
The NavIC system provides detailed regional navigation services covering mainland India and an area up to 1,500 km off mainland India. In addition to its primary function of providing PNT services (location, navigation and timing), NavIC is also capable of broadcasting short messages.
Under the agreement, ISRO and Oppo India will exchange technical information of NavIC messaging services to build fast, ready-to-use end-to-end application solutions by integrating NavIC messaging service with NavIC messaging service. Mobile platform keeping in mind the needs of Indian users.
“The Memorandum of Understanding will pave the way for future collaboration between ISRO and Oppo India to develop native solutions by incorporating NavIC short messaging feature in smartphones released by OPPO India, ” Oppo India said in a statement.
The messaging service is mainly used to broadcast life safety warnings in poor or no communication areas, especially in the oceans.
“Under our latest Memorandum of Understanding, we will support ISRO with our industry-leading R&D capabilities to provide a seamless experience for users of the NavIC app. In line with the vision With our expertise in Make In India, OPPO will invest in further product expansion with an experienced and competitive R&D team,” said Oppo India Vice President, Head of India R&D Tasleem Arif .
Oppo India has a manufacturing unit in Noida and an R&D center in Hyderabad.
“K Sivan, Secretary, DOS / ISRO President highly appreciated the efforts of OPPO, India in expanding the application of NavIC through their innovative R&D initiatives. He also called on OPPO, India Degrees include NavIC in all of their upcoming products,” the statement said.
