Japanese princess Aiko celebrates coming of age
Tokyo:
Japan’s Princess Aiko, the only child of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, celebrated her coming of age on Sunday at the Imperial Palace in central Tokyo after turning 20 on Wednesday.
Aiko, who is ineligible to ascend to the throne, is legally restricted to men, bowing and smiling to the press while wearing a tiara and white ao dai.
The princess wants to be an adult who can serve others, she said in a statement released by the Royal Household Agency on her birthday.
“I am extremely grateful to everyone who has joined my journey up until today,” Aiko said.
She said it was heartbreaking that so many people around the world had died from COVID-19 and expressed hope that “a peaceful and vibrant life” would come to everyone as soon as possible.
