Jermall Charlo calls Terence Crawford at 154
Via Robert Segal: Terence Crawford infuriated Jermall Charlo after calling his twin brother Jermell, who had no interest in going up against the high-tech welterweight champion.
Jermall says he wants to play Crawford (38-0, 29 KOs) and he will drop to 154 for the match to go. It would have been courageous if Crawford had accepted to fight the much larger Jermall, especially if he hadn’t insisted on the rehydration clause to accept him.
It’s unclear how serious Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) is against Crawford, but if he’s at the level that wants that match, it’ll be a big fight.
In terms of range, Crawford would easily become the biggest game in Jermall’s 14-year professional career.
If Crawford wins the match against Spence or even loses, a match between him and Jermall will be interesting as fans watch them compete at 154.
It would make Jermell look lousy if Jermall took care of Crawford at 154 more than he did because that should be the fight he was in rather than his brother. Although they are twins, Jermall has a larger frame and a stronger shot than Jermell.
“Terence Crawford, I’ll fight him,” Jermall Charlo said to Boxing screening when asked who he would like to fight if given the chance. “I will fight you, Terence.
Charlo said: “I will go back to 154th to fight Terence, he said he is willing to drop a weight to face Crawford.
Jermall hasn’t fought at 154 since his fifth round knockout win Julian ‘J-Rock’ Williams in December 2016, and he looked exhausted in weighting that game.
After five years at 160, it will be difficult for Charlo to put a 154-lb limit on his game against Crawford, but he can do it.
The only question is whether Jermall will be weakened after the challenge of dropping to 154, but that doesn’t matter. Even a heavyweight Jermall will have an advantage in size and strength over Crawford, and he will be able to pull his punches.
“Spence,” Jermall said when asked who would win between Errol Spence and Terence Crawford. “You all don’t see that Terence is not as flexible as you think. Texas Boys [Spence] difference. It’s too hot in Texas. Is different.
“All of that doesn’t matter. It was a war; a fight is going to break out,” Charlo said when told that Crawford is a good finisher and in good health.
“Before I hung up my gloves, I wanted to be one of the greatest boxers to ever wear them. I don’t care about being defeated. I’m just undefeated.
“I go in there, and I fight, I go in there and train hard, and I just want to be one of the best professional athletes I can be,” Charlo said.
