Jermall Charlo should be stripped of his WBC title
Via Adam Baskin: Jermall Charlo has sat on his WBC middleweight belt for the past two years without defending it, making him a the top candidate is stripped his belt by the sanctioning authority.
Some boxing fans believe that the main reason Jermall didn’t get disenfranchised was because he was famous. If he didn’t have a fan base, he would have been stripped of his title long ago and just a former champion.
Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) last defended his 160 lb WBC belt in June 2021beat Juan Macias Montiel in a tough fight that saw the Texans repeatedly injured in the later innings.
Since that fight, 19 months have passed without Jermall, 32, not stepping into the ring to defend his WBC belt.
Why hasn’t Jermall Charlo been stripped yet?
Rumor has it that Charlo has a back injury that keeps him from defending his belt, that’s okay, but the WBC should have given him the old and enhanced ‘Champion at Halftime’ title provisional champion Carlos Adames for the full belt holder in the meantime.
Why didn’t the WBC do the right thing and tore off the injured Jermall’s belt so that the 160 lb belt could continue to be circulated and contested?
Can you imagine an NFL super cup winner choosing to sit out for two years straight, knocking out other teams’ ability to compete for that trophy because they had too many injured players? It won’t happen. That trophy will continue to be in circulation.
WBC dropped the ball by not allowing their 15 higher ranked contenders to compete for the middleweight title, Jermall sat like a brooding goose waiting to hatch.
“He hasn’t defended his WBC middleweight belt since June 2021. Carlos Adames, interim champion, awaits his shot,” Mike Coppinger said above. Twitter about Jermall Charlo’s failure to defend his WB middleweight belt for about two years.
The magic question is, how long will the WBC wait before they finally strip Jermall of his title? Will it be two years? If so, what about all the contenders in the WBC rankings who have lost all of their careers without a chance to compete for a title that has been frozen due to Jermall’s shutdown? How do you give back that time to those warriors?
