Jerusalem, Israel: Violence erupts during controversial flag march
Crowds waving Israeli flags departing from Damascus Gate – the main entrance to the Muslim Quarter in Jerusalem’s Old City – danced and chanted “living Israel” and “dead for the Arabs”.
Israeli police in riot gear blocked surrounding streets, forcing the removal of Palestinian protesters from the route.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Association said 78 Palestinians had been wounded in Jerusalem by rubber bullets, sonic grenades and pepper spray, and one protester had been shot with live ammunition.
28 people were evacuated to hospital after clashing with Israeli security forces and Israeli marchers, according to the agency.
At least 163 Palestinians were also wounded in the West Bank. At least 11 of them were wounded by live bullets, according to Red Crescent.
More than 50 people have been arrested and detained in connection with riots and assaults on police officers, Israeli police said in a statement on Sunday.
Police also said five officers suffered minor injuries in the incidents and needed medical treatment. More than 2,000 police officers and volunteers have been deployed across Jerusalem.
The Flag Parade is an annual parade where most Jewish nationalist groups celebrate Israel’s capture of the Western Wall in the 1967 Six-Day War and the capture of East Jerusalem, placing the entire city was under Israeli control.
The march was also a highlight for Palestinian residents of the Old City in previous years.
