Josh Warrington makes predictions for Lara-Wood 2 and Lopez-Conlan
FEATHERWEIGHT Josh Warrington gave his thoughts on two key 130lbs bouts this month.
In Manchester and Belfast on May 27, Mauricio Lara and Leigh Wood clashed again while Luis Alberto Lopez took on Michael Conlan in two world titles.
Warrington will have his eye on facing either winner, and after sharing the ring with Lara and Lopez, he’s well qualified to offer an expert opinion.
Wood dropped his world title in a series of gunfights with Lara in February when the Mexican overpowered the British in the seventh round. The former champion was knocked out in the opening round and Warrington believes it will be repeat, not revenge.
“I think it would be the same result; I really do, he said boxing news.
“In Nottingham, I think Leigh is completely in control but this time a few factors need to be considered. He will go straight to the rematch. He got an incision, I don’t care how long he thinks he heals, it will open again. I don’t know how mentally strong he is but he will scare them off. One punch and it’s all over and I just feel like it would have had the same result.
Lopez won her first world title after beating Warrington in Leeds last December. It was a heavy loss for the hosts but a well-deserved victory for the Mexicans. This time Michael Conlan will be in the opposite corner and will have the home field advantage at The SSE Arena in Belfast.
“It’s going to be like a game of chess,” said Warrington.
“I feel that Lopez can fight inside better. I went up and down with that fight because I thought Conlan was a better fighter. Although Lopez was awkward, Conlan was a lot more awkward.
“Then I think Lopez didn’t do well this time around [against me] but I came up with a furious pace. After five or six [rounds] I really fought with him and he tried to keep dear life when I hurt him. Maybe I’m leaning towards Lopez for that one.
