Jost Capito resigns as Williams team boss
Williams boss Jost Capito has stepped down as team principal after two years at the helm.
The team confirmed his departure on Monday. Technical director François-Xavier Demaison will also leave the team.
Capito joined Williams as CEO in December 2020, becoming Formula 1 team boss the following July.
Williams has finished last in four of the last five F1 championships.
Capito helped bring the team back to eighth place in his first season with the team, but it’s been back in order this season.
Capito said in a statement: “It has been a tremendous privilege to lead Williams Racing for the past two seasons and lay the groundwork for the transformation of this great team. “I look forward to watching the team as they continue on their path to future success.”
That means F1 now has two teams without a boss in the new year, following Ferrari’s announcement Mattia Binotto will step down at the end of December.
Neither Ferrari nor Williams have confirmed who will fill the vacant positions.
Capito joined the team shortly after they were purchased by American firm Dorilton Capital, marking the end of the Williams family’s ownership.
Capito was successful ahead of F1 in the World Rally Championship, overseeing a period of dominance with Volskwagen in the 2010s.
Demaison served as Capito’s technical director at Volkswagen and joined Williams in March 2021.
One of Capito’s final decisions for the team was to promote American driver Logan Sargeant from an academy role to F1, where he will replace Nicholas Latifi in 2023.
