Some of the unbeaten boxers may have been built up with weak opposition, while others have a solid amateur past and are the real deal. Let’s take a look at the following four unbeaten boxers Maliek “Mayhem” Mongomery, 17-0, Gary Antuanne Russell, 17-0, Richard Hitchens, 17-0 and Abel “Zorro” Mendoza, 40-0.
Montgomery was a 2016 National Golden Gloves champion from Las Vegas, Nevada, with an approximate 47-14 record losing two split decisions to Teofemo “The Takeover” Lopez. He is now 17-0 with 16 stoppages. Eleven of his opponents had losing records.
In Montgomery’s eleventh fight, he had his one and only ten-round bout, winning the vacant WBC USA Silver Feather title over Aleem Jumakhonov, 9-3-2, in September of 2021. His biggest win was over Mexico’s Jonathan “El Fenix” Chanona Aguilar, 20-12, stopping him after three rounds in a scheduled six.
The best of these unbeaten prospects may be Gary Antuanne Russell, 17-0 with 17 stoppages. He won the 2014 National Golden Gloves, defeating Jaron “Boots” Ennis. He would lose a rematch and win their next two bouts, going 3-1 against the current IBF World Welterweight champion. He lost to Richardson Hitchins in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Russell is a southpaw who has always fought under 140, coming from a fighting family and is from Capitol Heights, Maryland. His last six fights were all scheduled for ten rounds. His last four opponents were Jovanie “El Lobito” Santiago, 14-1-1, stopping him in six in May of 2021.
Former WBC World Light Welter champ Viktor “The Iceman” Postol, 31-3, stopped him in ten in February of 2022. Former 2-division world champ Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy, 29-1-1, stopped him in six in July of 2022. In his last bout, knocking out in one round Kent Cruz, 16-0-3, in August of 2023.
Richard Hitchens 17-0 with 7 stoppages from Manhattan, New York. He holds the IBF North American, WBC Silver, and WBO NABO Super Light titles.
Hitchens’ last three wins were over Yomar Alamo, 20-1-1, stopping him in 8 for the IBF No. Amer title in November of 2022. Then, in February of 2023, defeating John Bauza, 17-0 over 10 rounds for the WBC Silver title. In his last bout, defeating Jose Zepeda, 37-3, for the WBO NABO Super Light title in September of 2023.
Abel “Zorro” Mendoza, 40-0, with 30 stoppages from El Paso, Texas. This is the least known of the four, having twenty-three fights in Mexico, his last four in Colombia, and one in Jamaica.
Twenty-three of his forty opponents had losing records. In June of 2021 he won the vacant WBC FECOMBOX Super Feather title knocking out Daniel “Dany” Mendez Torres, 18-3-1, in three rounds in Chihuahua, Mexico.
In November of 2021, Mendoza stopped Victor Zaleta, 20-5-1, in three rounds in New Mexico. In June of 2023, he stopped Helber Rojas, 20-8-2, after eight rounds for the vacant WBA Fedebol Super Light title in Melgar, Colombia. In his last bout in January of 2024, he defeated Diego Medina, 11-1, over eight rounds in Carmen de Apicala, Colombia.
