Justice UU Lalit to be next CJI: Centre notifies appointment | India News
NEW DELHI: The Code on Wednesday announced the appointment of a Judiciary Uday Umesh Lalit as the next Chief Justice of India, succeeding CJI NV Ramana who resigned on August 26 after a 16-month term as head of the country’s highest court.
Justice Lalit was raised directly from Bar as judge of Supreme Court in August 2014 and will be the second judge in the high court’s history to be appointed a CJI. However, he will have a very short period of three months as a CJI since he retires on November 8 when he is 65 years old.
“In order to exercise the powers conferred under paragraph (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Judge Uday Umesh Lalit, Judge of the Supreme Court, as Chief Justice of India, whose effective August 27., 2022,” reads the government notice.
Justice Lalit is the most senior judge of the SC after the incumbent CJI NV Ramana, and by convention the highest court judge is appointed as the CJI.
Justice Lalit, when he leaves office in November, will be succeeded by Justice DY Chandrachudif practice is followed.
Shortly after the government made the announcement for Justice Lalit, a statement was released from the apex court that said: “CJI NV Ramana today congratulated Justice UU Lalit on being appointed as the 49th CJI.”
