A professor in Kabul tore up his diploma live on television in Afghanistan to protest against Taliban policy ban women from going to college.
A man named Ismail Mashal, is the founder of Mashal Private University in Kabul and also a lecturer at University of kabul.
With teary eyes and a trembling voice, he ripped off his diplomas during a set appearance for the country’s Tolo News on Monday.
“From today on, I don’t need these degrees anymore because this country has no place for education. If my sister and mother can’t study, then I don’t accept this education,” he said.
He added that the degrees are for many of his Masters and PhD degrees, and they are original.
Clips of his arrival have since gone viral, including being re-shared by Shabnam Nasimi, a former policy adviser to the Afghanistan’s Minister of Resettlement & the Minister of Refugees, based in the United Kingdom.
Nasimi tweeted along with the clip: “Incredible scene as a university professor in Kabul destroys his diploma on live TV in Afghanistan.
The Taliban announced on December 20 that higher education for all female students was suspended. This comes after the government banned girls from attending secondary school in March this year.
It also stems from many other restrictions on women’s freedoms, including their access to public spaces. In November, women are prohibited from entering all the parks in Kabul. The same month, a Taliban official in Kabul announced that women would be banned from using gyms across the country.
Women are also required to wear headscarves and dress modestly in public in accordance with Taliban regulations.
