Trisomy 13 is a genetic disorder your child gets when they have an extra 13th chromosome. In other words, they have three copies of chromosome 13 when they should only have two. It occurs when cells divide abnormally during reproduction and make extra genetic material on chromosome 13.
Babies with trisomy 13 are born with life-threatening medical conditions, including severe intellectual disability and severe physical abnormalities. According to the Genetics and Rare Diseases Information Center (GARD), they often have abnormal heart, brain or spinal cord defects, very small or underdeveloped eyes, extra fingers or toes, cleft lip and palate, and cleft palate. frogs and weak muscle tone.
