Via Jack Tiernan: Kell Brook looked brilliant on Saturday night as he defeated his arch-nemesis Amir Khan in a sixth round knockout at Manchester Arena in Manchester, England.
Khan was overwhelmed by Brook from the start, and things got worse with each round. It’s obvious that Khan looks like a pumped 140-pounder in the face of the 154-pounder in Brook.
Brook took his time and fought cautiously until the fourth season. From the fourth round on, Brook fired shots at Khan (34-6, 21 KOs), injuring him and showing no respect for his strength.
The 35-year-old Khan struggled in the first round after being caught by Brook with his right hand very hard in the head.
Things didn’t get better for Khan in the second and third quarters, and it was clear that he would be eliminated after that.
“It was a great fight and an incredible event. It’s been too long in both of their careers,” said Gareth A. Davies. Intu Boxing during the fight between Khan and Brook.
“Kell Brook is gorgeous tonight. He revealed Amir Khan’s chin. He was patient. It’s not a fight for the world title, but it’s a championship for each other. He’s shown why he’s so good at his ring champion position.
“He was a mid-range commander. He shielded Khan’s attacks. He knew where they were and where they came from. He doesn’t land as much as with powerful shots, and he’s often in a one-way street, which was a drop tonight.
“He hurt Amir Khan early on and did the right things. Khan was never able to recover and move around the ring and had to get him in properly. Kell is the better guy in terms of exchanges.
“Sure, we saw all of his great qualities tonight,” Davies said when asked if this is the best version of Brook in this fight. “Amir made him change his gloves to Grant gloves when he entered the ring, which was very unusual.
“There was an argument about him having horsehair gloves in the dressing room. It’s important that he shows up when he really needs it tonight,” Davis said of Kell.
“Look, the final, it’s settled. They are 35 years old and both are past their prime. But Kell has a lot left to do and much to prove, I think. He wants that legacy and those bragging rights.
“He can go home now and tell his babies. He can put his sandals on his tubes and say, ‘I finally got the soul of that guy, who I wanted to fight for years and achieve all these things.
“I won’t tell him [Brook] in his shadow, but he [Khan] got all these compliments, but ‘I figured the hard way and I ended up beating him,” Davis said.
