A bill to repeal three controversial agricultural laws at the heart of massive farmer protests for more than a year passed within four minutes in parliament today without discussion.
The bill to repeal the Farm Law, 2021 was introduced in Lok Sabha at 12:06 pm and passed at 12:10 pm. The house was suspended for a few seconds amid loud protests from opposition benches. Soon after, the government expressed hope that it would also be cleaned up today in the Rajya Sabha.
Lightning procedures were interrupted by two postponements due to disruptions on the opening day of the Winter Session of parliament.
When three agricultural bills were passed in 2020, the opposition accused the government of passing it without much discussion.
Today, the opposition alleged that the government wanted to avoid facing questions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leak of bills just before opinion polls.
Parliament Leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said: “We ask for a discussion on the repeal of the Bill to talk about the Lakhimpur Kheri incident and the orders. If no discussion, the Bill has been passed.” Parliamentary leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, referring to violence in Lakhimpur Kheri of Uttar Pradesh on October 3 when protesting against farmers. is said to have been run over by an SUV driven by the son of the Union Minister.
The opposition referred to Prime Minister Modi’s words just before the session began, that the government was ready to answer all questions.
“There have been six Bills repealed in the past but there has been discussion on all of them before. The government does not want the Opposition to speak,” said member Lok Sabha.
His colleague in Parliament Shashi Tharoor also strongly opposes the government’s behavior.
“What they’re doing is wrong,” Mr. Tharoor told NDTV. “We want to raise farmers’ demand for a law that guarantees a Minimum Support Price (MSP) and compensates farmers who die in the fighting. protest. But the government denied us that opportunity.”
“This government doesn’t want to discuss. They have a problem with debate,” said lawmaker Supriya Sule of the Nationalist Party (NCP).
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the Bill will now be forwarded to the Rajya Sabha for adoption.
“The demand is that the farm bills be withdrawn. Even the opposition supported that. When we gave the bill, they started vandalizing the house. Why did they protest? That was trying. mind,” Joshi said.
