Kumin joins the Steeplechase community
If you look at entries for the second race at Tennessee’s Percy Warner Park, the Sloan maiden hurdles, and notice the links and the turquoise and pink silks of the number three horse, who start the Montmartre d’Ange for the first time, they can ring a bell. Montmarte’s gray-French four-year-old son is partially owned by Sol Kumin’s Madakat Stabilization (with Paul and Molly Willis, and the CFC Barn).
Kumin, 47, races under the name Madaket and is also involved in numerous partnerships with many of the thoroughbred team’s most prominent owners. His horse lineup includes recently heralded names like Triple Crown winners EvenlyMonomoy Girl, Lady Eli, Midnight Bisou, Yoshida, Whitmore, Mind Your Biscuits, Authentic, Exchargerator, and Catholic boy. So how did Kumin get involved with a diving athlete?
“I have a friend named Paul Willis from Boston raving about Keri (Brion) and how he owns horses that jump and train with her. I started doing some research on her work and I liked what I saw and learned. I’m going to send her some flat horses for training. I love horses and I love racing. I don’t really know much about jump racing, but I feel like I have enough knowledge and it would be easy to go in and see if it’s fun. I expect it to be.”
