Las Vegas Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium expected to host Super Bowl LVIII in 2024, sources say
HENDERSON, Nev. – Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium is expected to be announced as the site of Super Bowl LVIII in 2024 at NFL owners meetings in Dallas on Wednesday, sources confirmed to ESPN.
Both the NFL and Las Vegas Raiders declined to comment. The selection of Las Vegas as the venue, pending final approval from the tournament owners, was first reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The official announcement celebration is expected to take place using the lights of the Las Vegas Strip at dusk on Wednesday.
The Raiders moved to southern Nevada from Oakland in 2020 to play at the $2 billion Allegiant Stadium, with the expectation that the 65,000-seat venue could host a Super Bowl in the future.
While Super Bowl venues are supposed to have a minimum of 70,000 seats, it is possible that more seats and/or stand-alone-only locations could be added to the landing area under the Al Davis torch, as well as in the Wynn Lawn Club on the other side of the northern end.
The Raiders play their games on the grass, placed on a sliding tray. But UNLV plays on artificial turf that effectively lowers the playing surface, which can provide an additional pitch with lower seating. It’s also possible that the NFL could change the 70,000-seat requirement rule for the Super Bowl.
The next two Super Bowl games are scheduled to be played in Inglewood, California, at SoFi Stadium on February 13, 2022, and in Glendale, Arizona, at State Farm Stadium on February 12, 2023. before going to Las Vegas, awarded the championship game three locations straight west.
Super Bowl LVIII was originally headed for the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans before scheduling conflicts pushed that plan back a year, to 2025.
This is a major turning point for the gambling mecca, where in previous years it would have been impossible to have commercials promoting the city as a tourist destination aired during the Super Bowl broadcast. That policy has since been relaxed with the federation’s changing stance on legalized gambling and with the relocation of the Raiders to Las Vegas, a move that took three years to complete.
Las Vegas will also host the Pro Bowl on February 6, 2022, and the NFL draft April 28-30. The original draft will be held at Allegiant Stadium in 2020 before the pandemic turns. it becomes a virtual affair.
