Liberia Stampede at Church Killing Events 29
Monrovia, Liberia:
A stampede has killed at least 29 people at a religious event on the outskirts of Liberia’s capital Monrovia, police said on Thursday.
Local media reported the disaster occurred overnight, late Wednesday or early Thursday.
Police spokesman Moses Carter said the death toll was tentative and “could be increased”.
Details of the event are still unclear. Local media said it was a Christian prayer gathering – known as a “crusade” in Liberia – held at a football field.
Witness Emmanuel Grey, 26, told AFP he heard a “loud noise” at the end and saw several corpses.
Liberia, Africa’s oldest republic, is an impoverished country still recovering from civil wars between 1989-2003, as well as the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
