Logan Sargeant says it would be ‘honor and privilege’ to end Americans’ wait for F1 driver
Sergeant Logan says it would be an honor to end Formula 1’s eight-year wait for an American driver this year.
Florida-born Sargeant, 22, will race at Williams this season alongside Alex Albon at a time when F1 Stateside’s popularity is exploding like never before.
Until this year, F1 has remained without an American driver since Alex Rossi was replaced by Rio Haryanto at Manor ahead of the 2016 season.
The sergeant felt humbled to end the wait.
“Becoming the first American in a while is truly a privilege” Sargeant said at Williams’ 2023 race car launch.
“A great opportunity to represent my country to the best of my ability. Having three championship grandfathers is not something many people can say, so I am looking forward to enjoying the moments. there.
“I really find it a privilege and an honor.”
F1 is enjoying unprecedented popularity in the United States and this year the country will host three races, with the new Las Vegas Grand Prix joining existing venues in Miami and Austin.
“I think the timing is great,” Sargeant said.
“You could say that Formula 1 in America is at its peak. The amount of people asking me questions and being curious about the sport is so great, it resonates a lot.
“With the trajectory going, to be honest, I don’t see it stopping. I think that’s a huge plus and something that makes me very excited to see where it’s going.”
Unlike many of his countrymen this Sunday, Miami Dolphins fan Sargeant won’t be watching the Super Bowl – he got his first taste of Williams’ new car Monday morning at the track Silverstone as part of the promotional filming day.
“Our showcase is on Monday morning so… I think I’ll watch a replay,” Sargeant said when asked about his plans to watch the game.
“I’ll have to hide Twitter and everything for a few hours.”
When asked for his prediction, he said: “You know, it’s a tough one. I’d say Captain but you can’t count the Eagles, I don’t know.
“I would say Chiefs — 27-23.”
Logan will race with number two on his car in F1, he chose the number for his career ahead of his debut.
His debut will be the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 5. There are three competition days in Bahrain starting on February 23.
