Lummus & Braskem partner to decarbonise Brazilian site
Lummus Technology, a global provider of process technology and value-driven energy solutions, and Braskem, the world's largest producer of bio-based polymers, have announced that the companies will implement joint study (the “Joint Study”) related to the industrial demonstration of Lummus' SRT-e electric heater to decarbonize one of Braskem's sites in Brazil. The joint study will lay the basis for final negotiations between Lummus and Braskem on a definitive agreement that will, among other things, establish general guidelines for implementing such implementation.
Lummus and Braskem collaborate on a joint study to decarbonize Braskem's site in Brazil using SRT-e electric cracking heater technology. The initiative aims to reduce GHG emissions, in line with Braskem's goal of being carbon neutral by 2050. Lummus' SRT-e technology delivers a breakthrough in electrification with its modular design and enhanced heat flux configuration.
“The choice of Lummus' SRT-e electric heater as the means of decarbonizing the Braskem ethylene plants is founded on a shared commitment to develop and deploy profitable sustainable technologies and solutions,” said Jose de Barros, vice president and chief operating officer of Ethylene, Lummus Technology. “We look forward to demonstrating groundbreaking electrification technology that significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions.”
The SRT-e electric heater leverages Lummus's proven Short Residency Time (SRT) technology modified to operate electrically and incorporates a modular unit cell design that can be scaled up for factories to meet all commercial capacities. This technology uses all market proven components, plus an optimal heat flow profile resulting in longer radiant coil life and longer run times. Additionally, deodorization can be performed on a unit cell basis, eliminating the need for backup heater maintenance.
The initiative is part of Braskem's ambitions to combat climate change, which includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
“Our ambition is to significantly reduce CO2 emissions and increase product sustainability through innovation, internal development and key partnerships. Lummus' SRT-e technology will help Braskem achieve target to be carbon neutral by 2050, which will help increase energy efficiency at our crackers,” said Antonio Queiroz, Braskem Vice President for Innovation, Technology and Sustainability. “Expanding the use of renewable electricity and renewable materials will help Braskem reduce carbon emissions in the production of ethylene, propylene and other chemicals.”
Lummus has been supplying heat transfer equipment and systems to the power and process industries for over 80 years. Specializing in heat transfer systems and solutions for critical process environments, Lummus has produced industry-leading technology for combustion heaters, including Short Residence Time (SRT) pyrolysis furnaces and other heat exchangers, including HELIXCHANGER heat exchangers and advanced LABLEX breech and Polaris Lummus -lock exchangers.
