Magic: The Gathering’s most sought-after card sells for a record $540,000

Black Lotus, arguably the most sought-after card in Magic: The Gathering, sold for a record $540,000 in a recent auction.

According to the report of polygon, Black Lotus always tops its own record every time it is put up for auction. In 2019, a Black Lotus sold for $166,000 on eBay, followed by another purchase just two years later in 2021 for $511,100 – more than three times the price. Now, with the recent auction held by PWCC . MarketBlack Lotus claims its place as the most expensive Magic: The Gathering card ever sold.

First printed in 1993, The Black Lotus is considered one of the “Power Nine”, a limited set of MTG cards banned from competition due to their powerful abilities. In the case of Black Lotus, you will be able to generate three mana in any color for free of chargeallows you to play powerful cards or spells from the very beginning of the game.

While claiming to never reprint these damaged cards so as not to reduce their value, Wizards of the Coast released a special 30th anniversary set last year for a whopping $999 containing a number of out-of-print (though not tournament-legal) cards including – yes, you guessed it – the coveted Black Lotus, this is understandable is said to have caused an uproar in the MTG community. Although, as of this writing, The 30th Anniversary set is still out of stock on the Wizards of the Coast website.

Even after 30 years, Magic: The Gathering continues to be a cultural platform, having recently expanded its universe to include crossover with popular franchises like Final Fantasy and Assassin’s Creed, war hammer 40Kand most recently, Lord of the Rings.
