Malaysian court upholds sentence of Former Prime Minister Najib Razak in 1MDB scandal
Putrajaya:
A Malaysian appeals court on Wednesday upheld former leader Najib Razak’s 12-year prison sentence and prison sentence over the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal that contributed to the downfall of his government in 2018.
“We reject the plaintiff’s appeal,” judge Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil told the Court of Appeal in the administrative capital Putrajaya.
“We affirm the Supreme Court’s conviction on all seven counts.”
Last year, the 68-year-old was found guilty of all charges in the first trial he is facing in relation to the robbery of the sovereign wealth fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
Najib and his associates allegedly stole billions of dollars from investment vehicles and spent it on everything from luxury real estate to expensive art.
The first trial involved the transfer of 42 million ringgit ($9.9 million) from a former unit of 1MDB into Najib’s bank accounts.
The former prime minister is now expected to file a final trial in Malaysia’s highest court and could be granted free bail until the end of his appeal.
