'Man of the people!': Rockets' Marjanovic misses FT, gives away free chicken to Clippers crowd
In a game where there is nothing in between Los Angeles Clippers who earned the fourth seed in the West, and Houston Rocket who was eliminated from postseason contention, Boban Marjanović brought the crowd to their feet.
With less than five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Marjanovic stepped to the free throw line after being fouled by Daniel Theis. The Serbian missed the first free throw, but with a 72% free throw percentage, his chances of making the next free throw are very high.
That was until a buzz rang out in the crowd at Crypto.com Arena – loud enough to catch Marjanovic's attention. The Clippers ran a promotion where if an opposing player missed two consecutive free throws in the fourth quarter, every fan would receive a free Chick-fil-A sandwich.
When Marjanoic realized the situation in real time, he took matters into his own hands and appeared to rile the crowd before shooting his second free throw.
He even gestured to the crowd after the miss, almost as a way of saying “you're welcome.” It seems they call it the charity stripe for several reasons.
Not only did the arena erupt, but it also resulted in an electric call on the air by commentator and former NBA player Ryan Hollins. “He gave them chicken, he was a man of the people,” Hollins exclaimed on the Rockets broadcast. “He is a man of the people.”
Marjanovic may not have helped his average with that move, scoring just 2.5 points a game through 13 games played this season, but he's certainly transformed himself into an arena player. filled with fans. The Clippers would end up losing 116-105 but at least they wouldn't go home empty-handed thanks to Marjanovic.
Truly a man of the people.
