Peter Brant owns some of the finest mares in the world, some of which he raises in Europe – at Coolmore in Ireland and Haras des Capucines in France – and some in America, at Claiborne Ranch. We spent a fascinating half hour on the phone with Brant going through his 2022 matings with some of his finest mares. “I spend a lot of time doing this,” he said. It shows.
UNI (GB) (m, 8, More than ready–Unaided {GB}), by Dansili {GB}), bred with Frankel (GB)
Uni is the pony to King (GB) and she will come back Frankel. She is a great horse one mile, one mile sixteen. Frankel Get these very classic horses. Their structure is very complementary to each other. Both are beautiful horses.
BEAUTY PARLOR (GB) (m, 13, Deep Impact {Jpn} –Bastet {Ire}, by Giant’s Causeway), will be bred as Frankel (GB)
Beauty Parlor has won the French Guineas and she is the head of Blowout (GB). She will Frankel. She finished second in the Prix de Diane, but she actually went a mile to go a mile sixteen and Frankel will give her more distance. I like the cross on Beauty Parlor with Galileo (Ire).
DUNBAR ROAD (m, 6, Quality Sugar–Gift List, by Bernardini), bred as Into Mischief
Dunbar Road came in second, being beaten by one shot in Breeders’ Cup Distaff. She’s Quality Sugar, and as a maiden mare, she will enter Into Mischief. She is a classic horse from mile to 1/8 to 1/4 mile. I like to cross the Into Mischief medium distance with the classic horse, with the mare staying, so we thought it would be a very good match.
CAFE USA (m, 6, Medaglia d’Oro–Roxy Gap, by Charlie India), bred with Tapit
Cafe Americano just had an Into Mischief filly on Tuesday. She will be bred again Tapit. Tapit pass really well with Medaglia d’Oro. She is a kind of tall mare, and Tapit fit her in the cross and on the structure. I want a chance to get grass or dirt horse from her.
ENCHANTED ROCK (m, 18, Giant’s Causeway – Chic Shirine, by Mr. Pros Inspector), bred with Gunman
Enchanted Rock is Verrazano’s Dam (More than ready). She was bred with Curlin in 2021, and she will Gunman. This is my first time using him. She is a very large mare and we think Gunman would suit her for a land horse. She has become the dam of several fine earth horses, and she has an old King Ranch pedigree. She is a very, very good mare.
NAPLES PARADE (m, 8, Street Cry {Ire} –Treasure Trail, by Pulpit), bred to Into Mischief
Naples Parade is one of Ed Cox’s mares. She is the younger sister of Long Island Sound (War front) and she is a half-sister to Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}). She has a lot of family issues, she loves Street Cry, and Long Island Sound is a horse on the field, but it’s a good match for Into Mischief. They match in form and Into Mischief has stockier looking horses.
WOW CAT (CHI) (m, 8, Look at luck–Winter Cat {Chi}), by Cat Thief), bred as Into Mischief
We are also breeding her as Into Mischief. She finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, she won Beldame, from Chile (where she was Horse of the Year in 2018), won several places in Group 1 in Chile and she was one of our prettiest mares.’ had. She is a long run, a mile and a quarterhorse and we wanted to breed the best quarterhorses for Into Mischief.

FOR PAY UP SIGN UP (Month, October, Candy Ride {Arg} –Shriek, of Street Cry {Ire}), bred as Tapit
Paid subscribers will go to Tapit. She’s with the mare in Into Mischief, and she still doesn’t have a pony. Tapit tend to ride long distances. Plus, she’s actually a sixteen year old mare with a large girth and Tapit sometimes get the ponies a little smaller. I think the cross is great in terms of Candy Ride and Tapit.
FIFTY FIVE (m, 8, Get Stormy – Soave, by Brahms), bred with Sottsass (Fr)
Fifty-five has a dirty Dubawi (Ire) this year. She will Sottsass. She was an excellent young lady and was a bit inbreed with the Northern Dancer, which I prefer from afar in the pedigree. There are some good female families in there. I love crossbreeding horses that have had great offspring in their history – super mares that have been great racers and great producers.
BLOWOUT (GB) (m, 6, Dansili {GB} –Beauty Parlor {GB}, by Deep Impact {Jpn}), will be bred to Frankel (GB)
Blowout goes to Frankel. She just won [GI] The First Lady at Keeneland this fall. She was a very, very good horse, seven miles to sixteen meters long. I like Frankel with the cross Galileo (Ire) with Dansili. It’s good Wildenstein blood and it’s a classic cross. In terms of shape, both are suitable for each other.
HOMERIQUE (m, 7, Exchange rate – Chiquita Picosa, by Congaree), bred with Dubawi (Ire)
She has acquired classified shares in the US and Europe. She’s ready to be a King (GB) pony and she will return to Dubai.
NEWSPAPEROFRECORD (IRE) (m, 6, Lope de Vega {Ire} –Sunday Times {GB}, by Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), bred as King (GB)
Newspaperaperofrecord will be bred to King. I love the idea of miller to miller, and Kings in the US has been active for longer. We thought that was the horse we wanted to run in America. That’s why we chose him. Last year, she was bred with Frankel (GB).
PRECIEUSE (IRE) (m, 8, Tamayuz {GB} –Zut Alors {Ire}, by Pivotal {GB}), bred with Wootton Bassett (GB)
Precieuse, who won 1,000 French Guineas, is in King (GB) and she will come back Wootton Bassett. She is a nimble horse. Wootton Bassett get a mile to a mile and a quarter horse. We think the structure is very suitable for the cross.
SAMPLE SIGNS (m, 7, Creative cause–Church by the Sea, by Harlan’s Holiday), bred as Sottsass (Fr)
She just got a pony Dubawi (Ire), and she’s coming back Sottsass. She has won Miss Grillo and Ballston Spa. She is a very good roast horse with that Siyouni (Fr) bloodline. That is speed. It carries distance. We like that for Substantial Form. She’s limited to a sixteen mile, but she’s top class so far. We want to distance ourselves from her. She is beautiful. Great texture.
SISTERCHARLIE (IRE) (m, 8, Myboycharlie {Ire} –Starlet’s Sister {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), crossed with Dubawi (Ire)
It’s a great cross and Dubawi gets some good pace and she’s fast, but this will take her pace a bit. Sistercharlie’s Dam was bred for Dubawi, with success.
