Via Sean Jones: Floyd Mayweather Jr says he wants to see Canelo Alvarez give David Benavidez and Jermall Charlo a shot just like he gave him the chance to make a name for himself in 2013.
Mayweather didn’t need to give Canelo a shot at him to build his brand nine years ago, but he did help the young Mexican star by throw him a bone when he needs a boost to go to the next level.
Floyd didn’t have to do it, but for an act of kindness, he let Canelo shoot. It’s not Floyd’s fault that Canelo didn’t complete the mission despite being much younger, older and stronger at the time.
Unfortunately, Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) didn’t show the same willingness to help the careers of undefeated Benavidez (25-0, 22 KOs) and Jermall Charlo (32-0, 22). KO), and some believe he could NEVER go up against either talent.
In a final attempt to force Canelo to face him, Benavidez is facing David Lemieux (43-4.36 KOs) in a WBC super-middleweight knockout match on May 21 on Showtime Boxing at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
A win for 25-year-old Benavidez would make him a mandatory challenger for Canelo’s 168-lb WBA title.
If Canelo chooses to change up Benavidez by vacating or using his Franchise status with the World Boxing Council, it will be obvious to fans that he lacks confidence in the face of lion cubs.
Mayweather asks Canelo to shoot Benavidez
“He did what made him happy. Sometimes you have to do what makes you happy,” said Floryd Mayweather Jr. talk to Fighthype when asked for his thoughts on Canelo Alvarez’s decision to challenge WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol on May 7.
“I think one of the biggest challenges for Canelo is Benavidez. Benavidez is like Canelo. He is [Benavidez] different because he throws a lot of combinations, he is young, and he throws a lot of combinations,” Mayweather continued.
“They say Canelo is no different. Someone had to give Canelo a shot at the top because I’m a top guy. Canelo is a top guy. Benavidez, [Jermall] Charlo, or one of those people, deserves a chance. Give at least one of them a chance,” Mayweather said.
It’s too bad that Canelo doesn’t want to help the younger generation of boxers like Benavidez to help him build his popularity and help keep the sport going.
Is Canelo selfish in choosing not to fight Benavidez, or is this simple fear feeding its ugly head in the form of evasion? Either way, it sucks that Canelo would rather fight the likes of Avni Yildirim, Billy Joe Saunders, Caleb Plant, and Rocky Fielding than Benavidez.
Boxing fans are hotly talking about Canelo’s move to 175th to challenge WBA light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in his next bout on May 7.
Canelo chose Bivol over Beterbiev
Ordinary boxing fans don’t realize Bivol is not considered number 1 he’s at 175. The top boxer at 175 is IBF/WBC champion Artur Beterbiev (17-0, 17 KOs), and some believe Canelo is waiting until the Russian talent ages first first. when facing him.
Beterbiev will turn 38 on January 21, and he is old enough.
Canelo is not expected to fight Beterbiev in 2022 or 2023, meaning that by the time he is likely to duel in 2024, the two-time Olympic Russian will be 39 years old.
Why Canelo Doesn’t Fight Beterbiev in 2022, or why doesn’t he face him in 2019? The answer is obvious. Beterbiev is too good, and his power, body shots, relentless attacking kick and steel chin make him a nightmare for Canelo.
As such, Beterbiev was in the same boat as Benavidez when he was almost ignored by the Mexican star, as if he didn’t exist.
Betebiev is the equivalent of the third track in the metro. He’s too dangerous right now, but that could change in two years when Beterbiev is 39, not a boxer like today.
