Mazda “not sure” about the next generation CX-5

It’s not clear if Mazda CX-5 will receive its third generation when the company launches two separate new mid-size SUVs.

“I’m not sure if we’ll introduce the CX-5, so I can’t give you any details,” the rep said. CX-5 Current program manager, Mitsuru Wakiie, passed an interpreter when asked about a next-generation model.

The CX-5 only received an upgrade recently, suggesting it will remain on sale for a few more years.

But Mazda started production last year of CX-50 and CX-60are also mid-size SUVs.

The CX-50, manufactured in both the US and China, uses a shared front- and four-wheel drive platform with CX-30 and measures 4719mm long and 1920mm wide on a 2814mm wheelbase.

The Japanese-built CX-60, developed for Europe but also coming this year, measures 4740 mm long and 1890 mm wide on a 2870 mm wheelbase and uses an all-wheel drive platform. after/all gear.

In contrast, the CX-5 measures 4550mm long and 1840mm wide on a 2700mm wheelbase and is one of the smaller models in the entry-level midsize SUV segment.

But globally, the CX-5 is Mazda’s best-selling model until 2022 with a total of 365,135 units. For context, Mazda sold 1,116,107 vehicles globally in 2022, which means the CX-5 accounts for almost a third of the company’s total sales.

The Mazda 3 and CX-30 are 173,619 units and 172,057 units respectively.

The CX-5 is also Mazda’s best-selling model in Australia in 2022 with sales of 27,062 vehicles, just over double the CX-30 in second place and just behind TOYOTA RAV4 (34,845 sales) in its segment.

It is also the fifth best selling car in Australia overall.

The CX-5 isn’t the only Mazda to run into some internal competition.

involve CX-8, a longer three-row SUV derived from the CX-5, will soon be powered by the CX-80, a three-row rival to the “narrow body” CX-60 aimed at the European market. Mazda Australia said it was CX-80 review for Australia.

For 2023, CX-8 is getting a facelift of its own, with a similar set of changes as last year’s CX-5 facelift. It is due here in March.
