A cross from the first crop of many Grade I winners McKinzie (hips 1143) equaled the fastest quarter-mile run in a seven-session program for the Ocala Breeders' Spring Sales 2-Year-Old in Training when done distance: 20 1/5 Sunday in Central Florida. The youngster was consigned by Eddie Woods on behalf of breeders Brent and Beth Harris.
“We expect her to do well,” Woods said. “I wouldn't say I think she'll go in: 20 1/5. That's ridiculous. But she really stepped on it. She is a very honest girl.”
The beautiful filly flies out of D'Fashion (D'Wildcat) and is a half-sister to stakes winner and graded Strategic Dreams (Archarcharch). She scored $65,000 at the Keeneland sale last September.
“She has done very well since we got her,” Woods said. “She was a cheap RNA for most of the time in September, but she has changed significantly since then, from a physical standpoint. It's like night and day. She belongs to the Harris brothers in Kentucky and I acquired her through Padraig Campion of Blandford Stud.”
McKinzieThe first crop of 2-year-old colts performed well at OBS this spring and was led by the $750,000 colt, which was well received in the March sale.
“They acted like they were good horses,” Woods said of the first crop of Gainesway stallions. “They are very professional. They all tried as hard as he did. He himself has been running for office for a long time and it seems like they will do the same thing.”
A dirty girl by Practical joke (hips 1187) became the fourth teenager of the long workweek in :9 3/5 during Sunday's final workout of the undertack program. Out of Emerald Gal (Golded Time), the bay is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Sarah Sis (Sharp Humor). She was purchased by Carlo Vaccarezza for $25,000 at Keeneland last September and is consigned by Top Line Sales.
While the show was on hiatus due to an unexpected day off due to inclement weather on Thursday, buyers and sellers were back on schedule on Sunday.
“We usually have two days of shows between the showcase and the sale, but it used to be just one day,” Woods said Sunday afternoon. “And the extra day was intentionally put in there for that reason. If we come in on a bad day, we have a change date in there, so it works well. A lot of people went to see a lot of horses that morning before the rain got too heavy. And there are beginners here anyway, so it doesn't affect them at all. We played pretty consistently today and hopefully tomorrow we will be very busy.”
The OBS Spring Sale will be held Tuesday through Friday with bidding starting at 10:30 a.m. daily
