Mercedes-Benz launches new small car platform in 2024
Mercedes-Benz is aiming to increase profits with next-generation small cars and will cut its range of offerings.
The company will launch its new MMA architecture in 2024, underpinning four new vehicles.
The new MMA platform will also be the first to use the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS).
This could also be the last Mercedes-Benz platform to be introduced with an internal combustion engine option, as from 2025 onwards the company has said all new platforms will run solely on electricity.
That includes the new MB.EA architecture for medium to large vehicles, AMG.EA for performance vehicles, and VAN.EA for trucks.
Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that it will reposition what it calls the Entry Luxury vehicle, “honing more precisely the desires of discerning customers”.
It also aims to record higher margins on those vehicles, as part of a larger push by the company to hit an operating margin target of around 14% by mid-decade during the year. favorable market conditions or 8% in “very unfavorable” conditions.
It will also reduce the number of vehicles it offers in the segment to four, and it expects their market share in the segment to drop by a quarter between 2019 and 2026.
It currently offers A class hatch and sedan, CLA four-door coupe and wagon Shooting Brake, B-Class MPV and GLA and GLB intersect.
Mercedes-Benz also offers electric versions of the following two, EQA and EQB.
All of these models are based on the MFA2 platform.
Mercedes-Benz sold 680,000 Entry Luxury cars globally in 2019 but only 570,000 in 2021, yet in that time the average selling price has increased by 20%.
It is not yet clear which model line will receive attention.
Mercedes-Benz may choose to reduce the redundancy of having two four-door sedans in its A-Class and CLA, especially since the former has fallen short of North American sales expectations.
In an investor presentation, Mercedes-Benz showed a sedan under the wrap, but this image appears to be similar to an image featured on another page with the caption “New E -Class”.
Likely among the notable groups are the B-Class and CLA Shooting Brake, which are very European-focused models.
Mercedes-Benz has previously confirmed the MMA platform will be “electric first” but powered by an internal combustion engine, and it could also be used in mid-size vehicles.
MMA vehicles can also use some of the technologies previewed on rear-wheel drive, single-wheel engines Vision EQXX idea.
The efficiency-focused concept, revealed earlier this year, features a flat underbody, active cooling shutters and a retractable diffuser. Combined with the teardrop-style body, it has a drag coefficient of just 0.17.
Mercedes-Benz is redesigning its product strategy, expecting to increase its premium car market share to 60% between 2019 and 2026.
The company’s new strategy will allocate more than 75% of its investments to developing products for the most profitable market segments.
They are planning to introduce the new Mythos Series of “exclusive collectibles”, while also expanding the Mercedes-Maybach range to include a super-luxury version of the new SL.
