Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg spoke to creators on Wednesday announcing that the parent company of Facebook and Instagram will begin testing displaying non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on Instagram Stories. using an augmented reality platform called Spark AR. After launching an initial test of NFT visibility options on Instagram in May, Meta is now expanding the test group for the option, with plans to also bring NFT visibility to Facebook, “starting” with a small group of creators in America.”
Speaking about integrating NFT into Meta’s apps, Zuckerberg said in a post on Facebook, “We’re expanding our experiment so more creators around the world can display their NFT on Instagram.” The company also stated in an announcement, “Creators and collectors will be able to share their digital collections on Facebook and Instagram after we start rolling out the feature on Facebook to select creators in the US at a later date. “
Zuckerberg first mentioned NFT integration on Instagram back in March which he followed with a video in May announced that the team at Meta had begun work on integrating digital collections for the metaverse and Real Lab plans and also across the company’s entire application pool.
Back in May, Zuckerberg also announced that part of the users in the test group would be able to post NFT for free by linking a third-party digital wallet in the app. NFTs will receive a special “shimmer” around the photo with attribution from both the creator and the owner.
Supported blockchain networks for this feature include Ethereum and Polygonwith Flo the Solana wand coming soon, company spokesperson confirmed with The Block. Third-party wallets that will be compatible with this platform include Rainbow, MetaMaskand Trust Walletwith Coinbase, Dapper, and Phantom.
Earlier this week, Meta also announced that it would be joining with other tech companies to create a metaverse standards body. The team plans to build the next version of the web and develop common features for Web 3 and metaverse. Some of the companies that have joined the initiative include Adobe, Epic Games, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Qualcomm; Apple was significantly missing in the package.
