Mexico City sets world record after 14,299 people attend mass boxing class
Fifteen current and former Mexican boxers came together to teach the largest boxing class ever at the Zocalo, the main square in Mexico City, on Saturday.
Erik “El Terrible” Morales, Andy Ruiz Jr., Oscar Valdez, Jackie Nava, Humberto “Chiquita” González, Miguel Berchelt, Jose “Pipino” Cuevas, Alfonso Zamora, Jose Luis Bueno, Jose Antonio “Jaguar” Aguirre, Ganigan Lopez, Adrian “Confesor” Hernandez, Mariana Juarez, Ana Maria Torres and Alan David Picasso were instructors in a large boxing class organized by Mexico City’s Institute of Sports (Indeporte).
This event broke the Guinness World Record for the largest boxing division in the world with 14,299 attendees. The previous record was held by Moscow, Russia, when holding a large boxing class with 3,250 participants in Red Square.
Participants wore T-shirts with the colors of the Mexican flag to cover the entire square in green, white and red.
Javier Hidalgo Ponce, director of Indeporte, introduced the shirt just a few weeks ago.
“It’s going to be a great colorful party because together we’re going to form the Mexican flag with these beautiful shirts that each of the Mass Boxing Class attendees will have.” Hidalgo said on June 3.
The class lasted 30 minutes, with only two 20-second breaks.
