Microsoft confirmed on Monday that it would be eliminating the additional jobs, a week after the start of fiscal year 2024.
Additional cuts to downsizing announced in January resulted in 10,000 layoffs. The software maker also revealed a small number of cuts this time last year. GeekWire reported the latest cuts earlier on Monday.
Amazon, Google and other big tech companies have also downsized this year after quickly adding staff to meet increased demand during the Covid pandemic. Microsoft has said in recent months that customers are looking for ways to save money on their cloud computing bills.
A Microsoft spokesperson declined to specify the number of cuts in the latest batch. In January, CEO Satya Nadella issued a memorandum of understanding, indicating that the company would change its hardware product line and consolidate leases.
Microsoft filed a notice on Monday saying it will cut 276 people in its home state of Washington. Of those, 66 are virtual.
Salespeople and customer success representatives posted social media announcements that they had lost their jobs.
“Organization and workforce adjustments are a necessary and regular part of managing our business,” the spokesperson said in an email. “We will continue to prioritize and invest in strategic growth areas for our future and to support our customers and partners.”
